Communications Site Installer (R56)

Based on the NEW Motorola updates of R56 industry codes and standards, this four-day workshop is for Motorola employees and affiliates only (unless invited and Motorola authorization given) that provides a documented set of standards & guidelines for designing safe and reliable communications sites helps guarantee personnel safety, equipment reliability and equipment availability. This hands-on workshop validates attendees knowledge or core concepts required in the installation of a communications site and explores all the NEW competencies recently introduced to ensure that communications sites are constructed to industry best practices and communications equipment operates in an environment that assures service reliability and longevity.

  • Avoid Network Downtime - Lessen the likelihood of communications network downtime caused by non-compliance to R56 standards.

Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS)

This course is for employees who are responsible for the installation, maintenance and support of Public Safety Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS). Students completing this course will learn how Public Safety DAS systems work, the regulatory environment, building, fire - building codes associated with public safety DAS, and working with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). General Communications Technician - Level 1 (GCT1)

This certification program introduces public safety professionals and support staff to various communications concepts and technologies, including: interoperable communications solutions, LMR communications, satellite, telephone, data, and computer technologies used in incident response and planned events. This two-day workshop trains emergency responders on practices and procedures common to radio communication technicians during all-hazards emergency operations. This course will help communications technicians work within the Incident Command System (ICS) organizational structure. It is intended for federal, state, local, and tribal emergency response professionals and coordination/support personnel with communications backgrounds. Individuals who are responsible for managing a Strategic Technology Reserve (radio cache, mobile communications vehicle, or other deployable communications assets) are encouraged to attend.

GCT1 is modeled after communication systems basics and expands on the US Department of Homeland Security's Communications Technician program.

Line Antenna Sweep (LAS)

This frequency domain reflectometer hands-on course is designed for beginners as well as senior-level technicians and engineers, this course goes beyond traditional line sweep and PIM testing and provides all the knowledge in order to test and evaluate RF signals that begin at the output of a radio transmitter and eventually are propagated into the air to a receiver. Microwave Radio Technician (MRT)

Microwave radio still plays a major role in radio and data transmission systems. Wireless carriers continue to deploy microwave systems for data backhaul, and with the advancement of LTE for public safety, the need for microwave communications continues to grow.

This two-day course is designed for students and professionals who encounter point-to-point radio at microwave frequencies. This course is designed for those who operate, install, maintain point – to – point microwave radio systems. The session begins with radio licensing and fundamentals for microwave frequencies; including digital modulation in wide use today. Equipment types, configurations and required maintenance are covered, including troubleshooting and path issues. A general overview of radio software and how it is laid out will be covered, plus detailed use of test equipment, how to safely use it and interpret results. General Communications Technician - Level 2 (GCT2)

The GCT Level - 2 workshop prepares attendees for an advanced level of industry understanding. It elevates the skill levels of those already in the field, and delves into the details that are found every day when working in the telecommunications industry. Expanding on the US Department of Homeland Security COMT program, GCT Level - 2 covers everything needed to complete your ETA certification. 

There will be live demonstrations, using state-of-the-art equipment included during the program. Photovoltaic Installer - Level 1 (PVI1)

Solar electric will soon be incorporated into many systems, especially remote installations such as mobile phone towers, weather monitoring stations, emergency response systems, disaster preparedness and many more. Radar - A Link in Microwave Communication Systems

Radar technology has direct links to modern microwave communication systems. In this short course, the historical and technological development of microwave radar systems will be examined. Topics addressed will include: radar operational theory; microwave frequency concerns (band allocation, wave lengths, range and bearing determination); radar block diagram (signal flows, module interactions; design considerations); RF microwave generators (magnetrons, klystrons, TWT tubes); solid-state radar systems (bi-polar and FET applications), fundamental (algebraic) radar calculations; antenna theory (specialized micro-wave components, use of waveguide). Information provided during this short course will parallel ETA’s competencies for certification as an Electronics Radar Technician.

SmartHome Fiber Within The Home (FWTH) IoT Connected Technologies

IoT devices and products are evolving to interface at very high speeds to the Internet. Billions of these devices will be connected by high speed fiber and wireless technologies.

This session explores the interface connection of IEEE 802.11 (WiGig) emerging IoT products and devices to a Fiber Within The Home (FWTH) network. WiGig standards of 60 GHz millimeter wave spectrum band for multimedia streaming, VR headset connectivity, SmartTV, computer-to-monitor wireless links and routers, access points and other edge devices that exploit these WiGig technologies are discussed and their high speed interconnection to a fiber based network.

The Role of Wireless Boosters in a Crowded Radio World

Presented by Merle Taylor, CETsr

More data, more users, more interference and more piece in the puzzle! The role of radio boosters is increasing through the radio bands, along with Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) and Small Cell. All can be considered radio boosters, and all contribute to the overall level of RF we live with.

Cellular boosters now play a major role in coverage for our wireless devises and with this large market comes a set of potential problems. This session, conducted by Merle Taylor, from Wilson Electronics, will present the role of the wireless booster in radio services. Subjects will include why coverage is poor from base station and cell sites. Why building materials, walls and windows and new construction are such big contributors to poor wireless coverage. The how and why of using a booster and the importance of installing the unit correctly. Additionally, regulation surrounding the use of a booster, and the problems associated with radio interference when using a booster will be discussed.

Merle Taylor, CETsr, has been active in electronics and communications his entire life, starting with his amateur radio novice license in the early 1970s then testing for his Amateur Extra license a few years ago. While studying electrical engineering, he participated in building several amateur repeater systems throughout the state of Texas. In the early 1980s when his dad needed a 2-way radio system for his air conditioning company and asked for his help, Taylor learned how to license a commercial repeater system, installed it into a combiner/multiplex system and integrated additional cavities to fit in the system. During the mid-80s , he was newsletter editor and on the board for the Texas VHF-FM Society. During this same time, he started his career with Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems as a Cell Site Supervisor, then later as Site Construction Manager and RF Manager. In the mid-90s , he had an opportunity to work in the SBC International group as a System Design Director in Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Korea, Brazil and Switzerland. He later returned to Texas as the South Texas Operations Director with Cingular then with AT&T. Currently, he is designing and integrating in-building systems for both public safety and cellular.

Measuring Transmission Line Quality Prior to and During Installation on a Tower

Microwave and Millimeter Wave Radio for Backhaul

Presented by Tom Dover, President, Dover Telecommunications Services, Inc.

A lot has been said about the use of microwave in general vs. fiber cables for large data backhaul. Each, has their place and this seminar (presentation) will focus on the use of microwave radio, and the differences between conventional microwave as we know it and higher frequency millimeter microwave. The largest differentiators are path length and data rate. Modulation technologies and authorized frequency spectrum has given us options designed to help pass large amounts of data to Small Cell, DAS, Macro, and public safety sites. Both operate under the same general premise; meaning they are both point-to-point and both have increased bandwidth over other radio services.

So, what are the differences and when should one be used over the other?  These questions can be answered by looking at the application.  In general, conventional lower – meaning below 18GHz microwave is used for longer distances, redundancy, and backbone applications. Millimeter microwave is used as the name suggests at higher frequencies, and typically has higher authorized bandwidth allowing for higher data rates; but shorter paths.  Additionally, depending on who makes the radio, the modulation schemes will not be the same.  Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) and a variation called Trellis Code Modulation (TCM) are used in conventional microwave, while Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation (OFDM) is used in the higher bands. OFDM, is widely used in both Long Term Evolution (LTE) downlinks and wireless Access Points (AP).  QAM is being used for user equipment (your smartphone or wireless device) in the current 4G network.

How LiFi Network Technologies Will Change Our Lives

Explore how network connectivity as we know it is evolving through LiFi (Light Fidelity) technology and products. The current spectrum has to accommodate more and more users. The sheer number of connected devices are forecasted increase to 20 billion IoT devices by the year 2020. Future network growth is reliant on emerging technologies that enable the connectivity demands of tomorrow. LiFi technology can utilize the spectrum more than 1000 times greater than the spectrum utilized for radio frequencies. LiFi has the capability to enable unprecedented data and bandwidth for the future.

The 5G and IoT Evolution: How the Design and Construction of Infrastructure is Evolving in the Telecomm Industry

When we think of 5G we think of advances in speeds and applications for the UE, virtual reality, smart meters, and self-driving cars. But what about the design and construction of infrastructure? Advances in technology not only benefit the end user, but also those who work inside the industry. New and exciting technologies are emerging to help us do our jobs and the closer we get to 5G the more cost effective and realistic these technologies become: 3D laser scanning and cloud computing, drones for network optimization and COWs (cell on wings) in emergency rescue situations, virtual reality bubbles allowing CMs and PMs to visit their sites remotely from the office, and even automated heavy machinery that operate using GPS in conjunction with the 3D models provided from the A&E design team saving time and costly errors. Most of this is already being utilized in some fashion by firms such as ours. Let’s take a look at new cutting-edge technology that is being applied today to design, build and maintain cell sites, as well as what possibilities may soon become a reality with advances in computing power, 5G and IoT devices.

Demographic, social, climatic, economic, technological and geopolitical trends will shape the future strategic security environment (SSE). These trends are expected to create a world that is even more complex than confronting the military today. The talk defines five major Operational Environment changes that extend from the SSE and will profoundly influence the character of future warfare for the Army and joint military forces in the 2030-2050 timeframe:

  • Conflict Extends to Cognitive Domain - where competition for will moves from primarily kinetic to increasingly non-kinetic.
  • Domain Supremacy Contested- where the U.S. is moving from supremacy in most domains to more lethal and contested in all domains.
  • Transparent War – where the U.S. military is moving from limited, stove-piped military, command, control, communications and computer intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) to continuous and pervasive commercial C4ISR.
  • Battlespace Reconfiguration – moving from maneuvering primarily in open terrain and contiguous areas of operation to maneuvering in dense urban areas and dispersed, noncontiguous areas of operation.
  • Contested Expeditionary Operations – moving from power projection at will to continuously contested from alert to employment.

The military will need to rise to the challenge of placing big bets on modernization within this complex but uncertain environment. This challenge is complicated by the abundance of options available for new systems and capabilities resulting from an explosion of potentially disruptive technologies entering the exponential growth phases of development (e.g., RAS, AI, commercial ISR and communications, and human enhancement). Choices must be made among many viable options because of constraints that the United States faces in the development, acquisition, deployment and use of new systems.

About the Keynote Speaker: Macedonia is a computer scientist and an expert on simulation technologies. Prior to joining UCF, which is the largest university in the United States and the largest producer of engineering graduates for the US aerospace industry, he was a Vice President and Technical Fellow at SAIC, and a General Manager for a virtual world software startup. Previously, he was a member of the Senior Executive Service and Director of the Disruptive Technology Office (now IARPA) for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in Washington, DC. IARPA is the U.S. intelligence community’s centrally funded research activity for advanced technology. Prior to DTO, he was the Chief Technology Officer for PEO STRI (formerly STRICOM) in Orlando, FL and was responsible for the technology strategy of the U.S. Army’s lead simulation and training system development organization. During this time, Dr. Macedonia was the STRICOM lead in developing the Institute for Creative Technology (ICT).

Before coming to Orlando, Dr. Macedonia was Vice President for Research at the Fraunhofer Center for Research in Computer Graphics in Providence, RI, which developed breakthrough telemedicine technology for DARPA. He also served as an Army officer in infantry and intelligence positions and as a member of the Uniformed Army Scientist Corps.

He has a Ph.D. in computer science from the Naval Postgraduate School, a MS in Telecommunications from the University of Pittsburgh, and BS in Electrical Engineering from the United States Military Academy, West Point. He is a member of the IEEE Computer Society, the Association of Computing Machinery and the Army Science Board.
