CET Certification Renewal

ETA

When did Certification Renewal Begin?
Certification renewal was initiated by ETA on January 1, 1996.  Technicians who received their Journeyman/Senior certification are now required to renew their certification every four years.
Why Renew?

Why Renew Your Certification ?
Professional technicians have come to realize that the rapid changes in technology and products have also changed  the methods used in servicing.  Certification Renewal provides verification that the CET is keeping up with current technology and increasing his/her abilities and knowledge.

Associate
Technically, two years is the period initially set as the maximum an Associate Certified Electronics Technician (CETa) may stay with that status prior to testing for the Journeyman Level.  After this period,  Associate CETs must upgrade to the Journeyman level by passing one of the many Journeyman Option Exams.

Journeyman/Senior
Four years is the period established as the maximum a Journeyman/Senior Certified Electronics Technician (CET/CETsr) may spend with that status prior to recertification.  Renewal requires either retesting, classroom study and/or seminars.

Master
A Master Certified Electronics Technician is exempt from renewal/maintenance of their certification.

Methods to qualify for Certification Renewal
1.  Retest and pass one of the current Journeyman CET exams with a 75% or higher.
2.  Acquire validated credits for educational contact hours.  Ten contact hours per year are
required for the four year period (40 hours total).
3.  Electronics instructors can recertify by verifying their employment as an electronics teacher
     at an educational institute.
4.  Attending or completing in-house training programs sponsored by corporations or other
     organizations and associations.
5.  Attending program presentations at related technical or professional meetings.

Certification Renewal Cost
CNCT/CST - $37.50
CET - $37.50
CETsr - $50
CNST and CWS/T - $100

CEC Validation - (Continuing Education Credits)
Successful completion of electronics training and updating sessions can be validated by listing the topic, location, sponsor and date(s).  As ETA receives the information each year, it will be added to each CET's database.  CET's should send CEC totals annually to ETA at the Greencastle headquarters, 5 Depot St., Greencastle, IN, 46135.

Registration lists, transcripts, graduation certificates, college-credit copies, CEUs, or affidavits affirming successful participation at training sessions, are acceptable.  Each is subject to verification.

What Type of Training Counts?
Electronics Technician training classes or courses count.  They may be conducted at association sponsored seminars and conventions, manufacturer-supplier product technical seminars, at public or private educational institutions, military electronics training classes and similar events.

Partial Credit
Some types of classes may not contain sufficient material to qualify for full credit although the material has value.  ETA will give a lesser credit for these classes, subject to evaluation.

Where are you?
Many of the CETs, certified since 1966, have changed addresses, especially students who became Associate CETs, military techs who have been transferred  or have detached from the service, and others who have changed jobs and locations.

ETA will try to locate all of these.  Those who are ETA members or have taken CET or FCC exams through ETA and still have the same address will receive notification of the changes now occurring in the CET program.  Since all technicians do not receive the same publications or may no longer have close contact with ETA-I, each CET who is aware of the recertification implementation can help by informing others.

Easy, yet necessary
It is easy to make sure your records in ETA's CET database are up to date.  Some CET's have lost their wall certificate, plaque or wallet card.  We can sometimes help by finding the CET's registration information.  Replacement CET credentials are available for a nominal fee from ETA.  Recertification will also help keep records up to date.  This will be very important in the near future as more companies require certification.
